▸ About this destination

Liwa Desert — scale.

Liwa is where the desert stops being decoration and becomes geography. The Crescent dunes — Tel Moreeb prominent among them — climb past 300 metres and curve in the perfect arcs that define the Empty Quarter's northern edge. UAE Off-Road Hill Climb championships run here. International photographers fly in for the late-afternoon shadow play. Standard Dubai dune buggy guests who level up to Liwa never go back to Lahbab as their primary memory of the UAE desert.

Liwa is not a sampler trip. Plan minimum a full day from Dubai. Overnight strongly recommended for photographers and serious dune drivers.

▸ Highlights

What makes it distinct.

300+ metre dunes

Tel Moreeb and the surrounding Crescent dunes are among the tallest accessible sand dunes on Earth. The scale changes how the desert feels.

Empty Quarter edge

Liwa borders the Rub al-Khali — the world's largest contiguous sand sea. Liwa Crescent is the gateway view.

Photography light

Late afternoon and dawn shadows on Crescent dunes are unmatched in the UAE. November-February deliver clearest air.

Tel Moreeb hill climb

Annual UAE Off-Road Championship venue. Buggies and 4×4s climb the 300m+ slip face. Watching only — not part of standard tour.

Bedouin tent overnight

Custom overnight stays in privately-pitched tents at the Crescent edge. Stargazing, sunrise breakfast, then morning buggy or 4×4 session.

▸ Tour options

How to visit.

Liwa day-trip from Dubai

12-14 hours total. Dubai pickup ~05:30, arrive Liwa ~09:00, full afternoon expedition, Dubai drop ~21:00. Long drive both ways but the desert pays back the effort.

Liwa overnight Bedouin

Day 1: arrive afternoon, evening expedition, BBQ dinner, stargazing, tent. Day 2: sunrise + breakfast + morning session, Dubai return by 14:00.

Liwa + Empty Quarter combo

Multi-day expedition for committed travellers. Day 1 Liwa Crescent, Day 2 Empty Quarter edge, return Dubai Day 3 morning.

Liwa photography session

Photographer-priority custom day. Specific dune positions, sunrise + sunset coverage, drone within GCAA regulations.

▸ What affects the quote

How we price.

Abu Dhabi expeditions vary across multiple inputs. Each quote we send is built around your specific combination — no standard price list, no hidden surcharges. The factors below shift the cost most:

  • Group size (1-4 vs 5-8 vs 9+)
  • Pickup origin (Dubai vs Abu Dhabi city vs Al Ain)
  • Tour duration (half-day vs full-day vs overnight)
  • Vehicle tier (standard 1000cc vs flagship Can-Am / Polaris)
  • Add-ons (camel, sandboard, BBQ camp, photographer)
  • Season (peak Nov-Mar vs shoulder vs low Jun-Aug)
  • Date type (weekday vs weekend vs UAE national holiday)
▸ Pickup zones

Where we collect.

  • Dubai hotels (Downtown, Marina, JBR, Palm, Business Bay)
  • Abu Dhabi hotels (Corniche, Yas Island, Saadiyat, Reem)
  • Dubai International Airport (DXB)
  • Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH)
  • Al Ain hotel transfers (route-dependent)

Pickup is part of every quote — there's no separate transfer fee. Drive time depends on route: Sweihan ~1h15min, Al Ain ~1h30min, Liwa ~3h, Empty Quarter edge ~3h30min from Dubai (each way).

▸ Photographer's note

Light + scale considerations.

Photographers come for the scale and stay for the silence. Late-afternoon (16:00–18:00) and dawn (05:30–07:30) deliver the deep shadow play across the dune slip-faces — Liwa especially is unmatched in the UAE for this. Mid-day works for human-figure-against-scale shots where the harsh light becomes part of the composition.

Drone work is subject to UAE GCAA airspace approvals. Some Abu Dhabi areas sit in restricted zones (especially closer to AUH airport or near Empty Quarter sensitive sectors); other areas allow recreational drone work with permits. Confirm at quote stage and the team handles the relevant approvals where feasible.

Tripod work pairs with overnight stays — the camp lights extinguish around 23:00 and the dark-sky window for Milky Way photography opens. October to March new-moon nights deliver the cleanest star fields. Bring a wide-angle (14–24mm equiv), a sturdy tripod, and a head torch with red-light mode to preserve night vision.

Long lens work flips the desert from 'big' to 'patterned' — compressing dune ridges into abstract textures. 200mm and longer reveal patterns invisible to the eye at the scale you're standing.

▸ FAQ

Common questions.

Day-trip really feasible from Dubai?+
Yes but tight. ~3 hours drive each way leaves ~6-7 hours of desert time. Comfortable but not relaxed. Overnight delivers more value for the same logistical effort.
Vehicles on Liwa?+
Can-Am X3 RS Turbo RR is the favourite for Liwa terrain — the flagship 195 HP machine matches the bigger dunes. Polaris Turbo and 4-Seater also welcome. Standard 1000cc OK on the lower-crescent areas.
Family-friendly?+
Suits families with kids 10+ comfortable with the long drive. Below 10 we recommend Sweihan day-trip instead.
Drone allowed?+
Subject to UAE GCAA regulations and route-specific airspace permissions. Discuss at quote stage; the team handles the relevant approvals when feasible.
How is the trip priced?+
Pricing depends on group size, route choice, vehicle tier, pickup origin, duration, and add-ons. Each trip is quoted individually — send your dates and inputs on WhatsApp and the team comes back within the hour with a tailored quote.
Cancellation?+
96+ hours: no fee. 72+ hours: 50%. Under 24 hours / same-day / no-show: 100%. Liwa overnight bookings require deposit at confirmation.

Drove the Can-Am Maverick X3 out at Lahbab and it felt brand new — no rattles, sharp throttle, and the guide kept a proper pace up the dunes without ever losing sight of us.

Booked the evening safari with my in-laws and the BBQ camp exceeded expectations. Fire show and belly dance were a genuine highlight, not just filler.

Sunrise balloon flight was the calmest hour of our whole Dubai trip. Pickup was on time even at 4:30am, which I honestly didn't expect.

Took the 2-seater Polaris RZR for a 1-hour ride, first time ever driving anything off-road. Briefing was thorough enough that I stopped being nervous within ten minutes.

Our kids did the quad biking 90cc track while we took the Raptor 700 — genuinely worked for a mixed-age family group, nobody was bored or scared.

Camel ride at JBR beach with the skyline behind us made for the best photo of the whole holiday. Handler was patient with my grandmother getting on and off.

KTM 450 session at Lahbab was exactly what I wanted — real dune riding, not a padded beginner loop. Guide pushed the pace once he saw I could handle it.

Four-seater buggy fit my whole family for one price, which saved us from booking two separate 2-seaters. Guide was patient teaching my teenager the controls.

Second time booking with them, this time the deluxe balloon package with the falcon show after landing. Breakfast spread was better than most hotel buffets.

Morning desert safari with the ATV add-on was the right call for us — cooler temps, shorter day, and the quad section broke up the drive nicely.

Never driven anything with a roll cage before. The Can-Am X3 RS Turbo RR was a lot more buggy than I expected in the best way, big grin the whole ride.

Sunset camel ride photos came out stunning, the light at that hour on the dunes is unreal. Worth timing the booking around golden hour specifically.

Yamaha 220cc quad was a great entry point for my wife who's never ridden anything before. Guide stayed right behind her the entire 30 minutes.

Private morning safari meant no waiting on other tourists, driver adjusted the route based on how much dune bashing our kids could actually handle.

2-hour Can-Am ride out to Fossil Rock was worth every extra dirham over the shorter slot, terrain out there is completely different from Lahbab.

Group of eight of us booked the multi-buggy convoy for a friend's bachelor weekend, lead and sweep guides kept everyone together without slowing the fast riders down.

Booked the Big Red location specifically for the steeper climbs and it delivered. Not a ride for a first-timer but exactly what an experienced group wanted.

Cancelled once due to a flight change and got a full refund with zero hassle since we gave more than four days notice. Good sign of how the whole business runs.
