Quad Biking
Fossil Rock.
Sharjah-border deep desert with marine fossils visible in rock layers. Long distance, harder route, and the only Lahbab-area route approved exclusively for sport-frame quads.
Why ride at Fossil Rock.
Fossil Rock — locally Jebel Maleihah — sits on the Sharjah-Dubai border about 75 minutes south-east of Downtown Dubai. The site is a rocky outcrop rising out of soft desert sand where geological uplift exposed marine fossils dating back 70-80 million years to when the area sat under shallow tropical sea. Visible fossils include sea urchins, oysters, corals, and shark teeth pressed into the lighter limestone layers.
For quad biking, Fossil Rock is the deep-desert option. The route out from our Lahbab camp covers around 25-30 km of mixed terrain — soft sand, rocky transitions, mid-grade dunes, and the final approach to the rock outcrop. Round trip is around 2 hours of riding plus a 20-minute stop at the rock for fossil viewing and photos. We approve only the Sport 625cc and Raptor 700cc for this route because the chassis geometry, suspension travel, and rider experience profile match what the route demands.
This is not a beginner detour. We require prior ATV experience confirmed at the camp before unlocking the Fossil Rock route — usually that means you've ridden the 400cc Turbo on previous Lahbab visits or have sport-quad track time elsewhere. The team confirms via WhatsApp at booking and again at the camp briefing.
What the ride feels like.
The route flow: brief at Lahbab camp (15 min), warm-up loop on Lahbab inner ridges (20 min), transition section to deeper desert (20 min), Fossil Rock approach with dune navigation (15 min), arrival and 20-minute rock + fossil walk, return route (35 min). Total programme is around 2 hours including the rock stop.
The marine fossils are pressed into the lighter limestone bands on the rock outcrop. The team points out the obvious specimens — sea urchin tests, bivalve shells, the occasional shark tooth. Removing fossils is illegal under UAE heritage law; photography only. Bring a macro lens or phone close-up mode if fossils are the priority.
Weather closes Fossil Rock more often than Lahbab. Heat above 38°C surface, low visibility from sandstorms, or rain (rare but it happens January-March) will close the route. Confirm with the team on WhatsApp the morning of booking. October to March is the operational window.
