Quad Biking
Big Red.
The 50-metre landmark dune off the E44 / Hatta road. Steeper faces, harder line work, and the iconic photo crest that built Dubai's quad-biking reputation.
Why ride at Big Red.
Big Red — known locally as Al Hamar — sits about 50 minutes south-east of Downtown Dubai on the E44 highway towards Hatta. The single 50-metre crest rising sharply from the flat sand is what most international visitors picture when they think of "the Dubai desert". Sand here is deeper red than Lahbab and the crest face has a 30-degree angle that punishes lazy throttle inputs.
We do not run Big Red as a standalone quad starting point — every session begins at our Lahbab desert camp 5 km away, briefing happens there, and then the convoy detours to Big Red on the 1-hour or 2-hour packages. The Yamaha 220cc and 400cc single can do short Big Red detours with the guide's approval. The 400cc Turbo, Grizzly 700, Sport 625 and Raptor 700 are the four machines we approve for the upper faces and ridge work.
Photography is why most riders specifically request Big Red. The crest catches direct red light at sunrise and sunset, the long shadows hide tyre marks, and a quad at the top of the ridge gives you the silhouette shot that travels well on social. Tell the guide at the camp briefing if photos are the priority — pace adjusts, photo stops added.
What the ride feels like.
Big Red is harder than Lahbab. The single 50-metre face means there's one route up and one route down — pace and line have to be right or you stall halfway up. Beginners who managed Lahbab fine often need a second guide-led approach on Big Red. Bigger machines (400CC Turbo and up) make this dramatically easier — torque carries momentum through the soft top section.
Wind matters here. The exposed crest catches strong gusts in March-April; the team will reroute to a side ridge if conditions feel unsafe. Heat matters more — Big Red sand on a July afternoon hits 70°C surface temperature. We close Big Red detours to morning slots only May to September.
Most photographers spend 15-25 minutes at the crest. The convoy parks, guide stays on-site, and you have time to set up DSLRs, drones (subject to current Dubai drone rules — check before flying), or sports cameras. Sunset in October-March hits the crest from 16:50-17:25 — that's the golden window.
