About this location

About Big Red Dune.

Big Red — locally Al Hamar, 'The Red' — is the single most recognisable dune in the United Arab Emirates. It sits beside the E44 Dubai-Hatta highway, roughly 75 km south-east of Downtown Dubai, and tops out at slightly more than 100 metres. It is the third-tallest dune in the country and easily the most photographed. Pretty much every Dubai 4×4 ad, every off-road magazine cover and every off-road YouTube channel has crested it at some point.

For dune buggy guests, Big Red is the step up from Lahbab. The faces are steeper, the climbs are longer, and the run-out at the bottom of the main bowl gives you serious momentum. We recommend Big Red for guests with at least one previous dune ride under their belt, or for confident drivers who want the most dramatic terrain Dubai has to offer.

Terrain & ride feel

What the Big Red Dune ride feels like.

Honest terrain notes from our lead guides — what to expect on the sand, not marketing copy.

Big Red is two distinct rides in one. The lower flanks have firm, well-packed sand and rolling smaller ridges — a perfectly fine warm-up for any skill level. The main 100m face is the headline: a steep, soft, near-vertical climb that rewards smooth throttle control. Drop down the back side and you land in a long, deep bowl with photogenic ridges all around — that is where most of our adrenaline 2-hour rides spend their time.

Because Big Red sits right next to the E44, it gets visited by 4×4 clubs, quad-bikers and motocross riders, especially on weekends. We time our routes to keep you in clean, less-crowded zones. Sand is at its deepest red colour an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset — those are the slots photographers always pick.

Best time to ride

When to visit.

Time-of-day and seasonality guidance. Sunrise and late afternoon are the most popular slots.

Sunrise (5:30–7:30 am)

Less traffic on E44, deepest red colour, coolest sand. Photographer's choice.

Late afternoon (3–5 pm)

Long shadows on the dune face — 4×4 community is most active here.

Sunset (5–6:30 pm)

The single most-photographed Big Red moment. Combine with safari + BBQ at a Lahbab camp.

Avoid weekends mid-day

Friday and Saturday afternoons get busy with the off-road community. Weekday rides are quieter.

FAQ

Common questions about Big Red Dune.

Answers from our riders, route guides and the operations team.

What is the cancellation policy for this location?
Cancellation timing is the same for all dune buggy locations: 96+ hours before the ride has no cancellation fee, 72+ hours before the ride has a 50% cancellation fee, and under 24 hours, same-day cancellation or no-show has a 100% cancellation fee. Read the full cancellation policy before booking.
Why is Big Red called Big Red?
Big Red — Al Hamar in Arabic — is named for its deep iron-oxide red sand and its size. It tops out at slightly more than 100 metres, making it the third tallest dune in the UAE, and the iron-rich sand reflects almost crimson at sunrise and sunset. It sits beside the E44 Dubai-Hatta Highway, roughly 75 km south-east of Downtown.
Is Big Red harder than Lahbab?
Yes — Big Red is a step up. Lahbab tops out around 80 metres with a wide range of beginner and intermediate dune lines. Big Red's main face is steeper and longer, the run-outs are faster, and the inner bowls are deeper. We recommend Big Red for guests who already have at least one dune ride behind them, or for confident drivers in the Can-Am Maverick X3 or X3 RS Turbo RR.
Can a beginner ride Big Red?
A beginner can ride the lower flanks of Big Red on a 30-minute or 1-hour package — we keep first-timers on the firmer sand and away from the 100m face. If your goal is the iconic 100m climb itself, plan a 2-hour package and book a more powerful buggy. Or do Lahbab first and Big Red as your second ride.
Which buggy is best for Big Red's 100m face?
For the steep main face, we recommend the Can-Am Maverick X3, the Can-Am X3 RS Turbo RR (the flagship 195 hp buggy) or the 4-Seater Can-Am Maverick X3. The 1000cc Turbo dune buggy also handles Big Red well and is a good cost-conscious choice. Pure entry-level non-turbo buggies will struggle with the deepest soft sand.
How do I get to Big Red?
Big Red is 55 minutes from Downtown Dubai (75 km via E66 → E44 Hatta Road). From Marina/JBR allow 1 hr 5 min, and from Sharjah around 1 hour. Free hotel pickup is included on 1-hour and 2-hour rides. We share a live Google Maps pin once you book.
Are camels and 4×4s on Big Red?
Yes — Big Red is a public dune, and you will often see camels grazing nearby, 4×4 clubs cresting the main face, sandboarders, and quad bikers. We time our rides to keep you in clean buggy-friendly zones away from the busiest 4×4 hours, and our guide always has eyes on the surrounding traffic.
Is Big Red the highest dune in the UAE?
No — the highest is Tel Moreeb in Liwa (Abu Dhabi), at around 300 metres, followed by Mleiha in Sharjah. Big Red is the third highest at roughly 100 metres, and the most accessible from Dubai by far. For the 300m Liwa dune, check our Abu Dhabi tours page.

Drove the Can-Am Maverick X3 out at Lahbab and it felt brand new — no rattles, sharp throttle, and the guide kept a proper pace up the dunes without ever losing sight of us.

KTM 450 session at Lahbab was exactly what I wanted — real dune riding, not a padded beginner loop. Guide pushed the pace once he saw I could handle it.

Never driven anything with a roll cage before. The Can-Am X3 RS Turbo RR was a lot more buggy than I expected in the best way, big grin the whole ride.

Sunset camel ride photos came out stunning, the light at that hour on the dunes is unreal. Worth timing the booking around golden hour specifically.

2-hour Can-Am ride out to Fossil Rock was worth every extra dirham over the shorter slot, terrain out there is completely different from Lahbab.

Booked the Big Red location specifically for the steeper climbs and it delivered. Not a ride for a first-timer but exactly what an experienced group wanted.
