About this location

About Lahbab Red Dunes.

Lahbab — locally called the Red Dunes — is the desert most photographers think of when they picture Dubai. It sits roughly 60 kilometres south-east of Downtown along the E66 (Dubai-Hatta road) and reaches us in well under an hour from most hotels. The sand here owes its deep orange-red colour to iron-oxide weathering, and the dune ridges run in long, photogenic curves that hit eighty metres at the highest crests.

For dune buggy guests, Lahbab is the all-rounder. The terrain has both the rolling beginner zones and the steeper advanced bowls, so we route you according to your group's confidence and the buggy you're driving. Most of our 30-minute, 1-hour and 2-hour packages run from our Lahbab base camp — the camp itself is the meeting point for short rides and the drop-off point for hotel-pickup rides too.

Terrain & ride feel

What the Lahbab Red Dunes ride feels like.

Honest terrain notes from our lead guides — what to expect on the sand, not marketing copy.

Lahbab gives you three terrain layers within a single ride. The outer fringe is firm, gently undulating sand — the warm-up loop where new drivers get used to the throttle and the lead-guide pace. Push deeper and the dunes rise into softer ridges with steeper faces, where 1000cc Turbo and Can-Am buggies start to stretch their legs on quick climbs and controlled side-slips. The deepest pocket — what locals call the inner bowls — has sharp 60-80m faces, and we only run intermediate-confident drivers in there.

Surface temperature on the sand swings from cool (15–20°C in winter mornings) to genuinely hot (55°C+ on summer afternoons), which is why we recommend sunrise or late-afternoon slots from May to September. The dunes reshape after every wind event, so the route never repeats — your guide picks fresh lines every drive.

Best time to ride

When to visit.

Time-of-day and seasonality guidance. Sunrise and late afternoon are the most popular slots.

Sunrise (5:30–7:30 am)

Cool sand, golden light, zero crowds. Best for photography. Available year-round.

Morning (8–11 am)

Comfortable temperatures Oct–April. We avoid morning slots in summer (June–Sept).

Late afternoon (3–5 pm)

Long shadows, warm tones. Most popular slot Oct–April.

Sunset (5–6:30 pm)

Iconic golden-hour ride. Combine with safari + BBQ camp dinner.

FAQ

Common questions about Lahbab Red Dunes.

Answers from our riders, route guides and the operations team.

What is the cancellation policy for this location?
Cancellation timing is the same for all dune buggy locations: 96+ hours before the ride has no cancellation fee, 72+ hours before the ride has a 50% cancellation fee, and under 24 hours, same-day cancellation or no-show has a 100% cancellation fee. Read the full cancellation policy before booking.
Where exactly is Lahbab and how do I get there?
Lahbab is roughly 60 km south-east of Downtown Dubai, off the E66 (Dubai-Hatta road). It is about 45 minutes by car from Downtown, 55 minutes from Marina/JBR, and 1 hour 45 minutes from Abu Dhabi. We share a live Google Maps pin once you book, and we offer free hotel pickup on every 1-hour and 2-hour ride.
Why do they call it Red Dunes?
Lahbab's sand is rich in iron-oxide, which weathers to a deep orange-red colour — most pronounced an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. The colour deepens further after seasonal rain. It is the most photographed dune colour in the UAE and the reason Lahbab is on every Dubai photographer's shortlist.
Are Lahbab dunes good for beginner buggy drivers?
Yes — Lahbab has the widest skill range of any Dubai dune location. Outer dune lines are firm, gently undulating sand, perfect for first-time drivers. We route beginners onto smoother routes and only take intermediate-confident drivers into the inner bowls. Every ride starts with a 15-minute briefing and a guided lead-driver convoy.
Which buggy should I pick for Lahbab?
For first-timers, the 2-Seater Dune Buggy 1000cc (from AED 600 for 30 minutes) is the most popular choice. Families of 4 normally take the 4-Seater 1000cc. Confident drivers chasing a real adrenaline ride book the Can-Am Maverick X3 or the flagship Can-Am X3 RS Turbo RR. Compare all 8 buggies on the fleet hub.
How tall are the Lahbab dunes?
Most dune crests in our riding zone sit between 30 and 50 metres high. The tallest faces in the inner bowls reach around 80 metres. For the truly iconic 100m+ Big Red dune, you would head 15 minutes further south to the Big Red location instead.
Is Lahbab open year-round?
Yes — we run daily departures from Lahbab 365 days a year. From October to April it is comfortable at any time of day. From May to September we recommend sunrise and late-afternoon slots only because surface sand temperatures climb above 50°C in midday summer.
Can I combine a Lahbab buggy ride with a desert safari?
Yes — Lahbab is the camp where most Dubai safari operators run their evening BBQ. We can stack a 1-hour buggy ride with the evening safari + BBQ camp (Adult AED 240, Child AED 225) so you ride first, then watch sunset from the camp, then sit down to dinner. Ask us on WhatsApp.

Drove the Can-Am Maverick X3 out at Lahbab and it felt brand new — no rattles, sharp throttle, and the guide kept a proper pace up the dunes without ever losing sight of us.

Booked the evening safari with my in-laws and the BBQ camp exceeded expectations. Fire show and belly dance were a genuine highlight, not just filler.

Took the 2-seater Polaris RZR for a 1-hour ride, first time ever driving anything off-road. Briefing was thorough enough that I stopped being nervous within ten minutes.

Our kids did the quad biking 90cc track while we took the Raptor 700 — genuinely worked for a mixed-age family group, nobody was bored or scared.

KTM 450 session at Lahbab was exactly what I wanted — real dune riding, not a padded beginner loop. Guide pushed the pace once he saw I could handle it.

Second time booking with them, this time the deluxe balloon package with the falcon show after landing. Breakfast spread was better than most hotel buffets.

Morning desert safari with the ATV add-on was the right call for us — cooler temps, shorter day, and the quad section broke up the drive nicely.

Never driven anything with a roll cage before. The Can-Am X3 RS Turbo RR was a lot more buggy than I expected in the best way, big grin the whole ride.

Sunset camel ride photos came out stunning, the light at that hour on the dunes is unreal. Worth timing the booking around golden hour specifically.

Yamaha 220cc quad was a great entry point for my wife who's never ridden anything before. Guide stayed right behind her the entire 30 minutes.

2-hour Can-Am ride out to Fossil Rock was worth every extra dirham over the shorter slot, terrain out there is completely different from Lahbab.

Group of eight of us booked the multi-buggy convoy for a friend's bachelor weekend, lead and sweep guides kept everyone together without slowing the fast riders down.

Booked the Big Red location specifically for the steeper climbs and it delivered. Not a ride for a first-timer but exactly what an experienced group wanted.
