About this location

About Fossil Rock (Jebel Maleihah).

Fossil Rock — Jebel Maleihah on the maps — is one of the more unusual dune locations in the country. It sits on the Dubai-Sharjah border about 75 km east of Downtown Dubai, and the rock itself is a 50-metre limestone ridge that started out as a coral reef at the bottom of a Cretaceous sea around 80 million years ago. As you walk the lower slopes, you will spot fossilised bivalves, sea-urchin spines and the occasional ammonite still embedded in the stone.

For dune buggy rides, that geology gives you a uniquely mixed terrain. The dunes here are soft and red — similar to Lahbab — but they break against the limestone ridge and create photogenic contrasts you do not get anywhere else around Dubai. Most photographers come to Fossil Rock for golden-hour shots; most riders come for the variety of terrain inside a single one-hour loop. The wider Mleiha area is also UAE's first UNESCO-recognised cultural landscape.

Terrain & ride feel

What the Fossil Rock (Jebel Maleihah) ride feels like.

Honest terrain notes from our lead guides — what to expect on the sand, not marketing copy.

Fossil Rock gives you three terrain types in one ride: soft red dunes on the approach, packed gravel and rock-shelf transitions around the ridge base, and dramatic dune-against-rock backdrops at the top. The soft sand is similar to Lahbab in feel — long, rolling rides — but the rock context changes the visual rhythm completely. You feel like you are riding through an open-air museum.

We never drive the buggies up the rock itself — that is a protected geological site. Our routes loop around the base of the ridge, climb the surrounding dunes for elevated photo angles, and end with a stop at the fossil-hunting zone where the guide points out the actual marine fossils embedded in the stone. The neighbouring Mleiha area has prehistoric tombs and the country's first UNESCO-listed archaeological sites, and we can recommend a Mleiha visitor-centre add-on.

FAQ

Common questions about Fossil Rock (Jebel Maleihah).

Answers from our riders, route guides and the operations team.

What is the cancellation policy for this location?
Cancellation timing is the same for all dune buggy locations: 96+ hours before the ride has no cancellation fee, 72+ hours before the ride has a 50% cancellation fee, and under 24 hours, same-day cancellation or no-show has a 100% cancellation fee. Read the full cancellation policy before booking.
Where exactly is Fossil Rock?
Fossil Rock — known as Jebel Maleihah on the maps — is on the Dubai-Sharjah border, around 75 km east of Downtown Dubai (1 hour by car) and 60 km from Sharjah city centre (45 min). It sits off the E55 / Mleiha Road and is unmistakable from the highway thanks to its 50-metre limestone ridge.
What kind of fossils will I see?
Fossil Rock's limestone is from the Cretaceous period, around 80 million years old, when this was a shallow tropical sea. You will spot fossilised bivalves (clams), sea-urchin spines, and occasional ammonites embedded in the rock face. Our guide points out the easiest specimens to find. Please look but do not remove fossils — the area is now protected.
Can you drive the buggy up the rock itself?
No — the limestone ridge is a protected geological site. Our buggy routes loop around the dunes at the base of the ridge and climb the surrounding sand crests for elevated photo angles. We finish with a guided fossil-hunting walk on foot at the rock face — that is how the geology side of the experience works.
How does Fossil Rock compare to Lahbab?
Lahbab is pure rolling red dunes — straight-up dune-bashing. Fossil Rock has dunes plus the limestone ridge backdrop, so the visual rhythm is more varied and the terrain mixes soft sand with packed gravel transitions. If you want the iconic Dubai dune ride, choose Lahbab. If you want geology + dunes + a different photo set, choose Fossil Rock.
Is the Mleiha UNESCO site nearby?
Yes — the Mleiha Archaeological Centre is 15 minutes from our Fossil Rock meeting point. It covers UAE's first UNESCO-recognised cultural landscape: prehistoric burial tombs, Bronze Age artefacts, Umm an-Nar tombs and the famous Faya rock-art shelter. Many guests pair a sunrise buggy ride with a morning at the visitor centre.
Is Fossil Rock open year-round?
Yes — daily departures, 365 days a year. From October to April every time slot is comfortable. From May to September we recommend sunrise rides only because the limestone surface and surrounding sand both heat up significantly past midday.
Which buggy is best for Fossil Rock?
Fossil Rock is friendly to every buggy in the fleet because the dunes around the rock are softer and gentler than Big Red. The 2-Seater Dune Buggy 1000cc is the popular entry pick (or the 30-min taster from AED 300). Photo-tour guests usually book the Can-Am Maverick X3 because it climbs the elevated ridges smoothly for backdrop shots.
